The Research and Instructional Support (RIS) team at Mount Holyoke College seeks an enthusiastic, creative and service-oriented new colleague to join us in integrating forward-looking, meaningful library research and instructional technology into the teaching and learning activities at Mount Holyoke College.  (Funding through December 2015.)

The Director of Library Services and Instructional Technology provides strategic leadership for all functions of the library, including oversight of instructional technology, collection development, information literacy, and services for students and faculty. The director is responsible for the overall management of the Library, including personnel administration, program development and evaluation, organization of operations, budgeting, and external relations both within and beyond the College and collaborates with other campus departments in support of the College’s mission.

To Ban or Not to Ban: What’s Your Policy on Mobile Devices in the Classroom?

Listen. Do you hear that click-press-patter of fingertips on a keyboard? Is it interrupting the lecture? Is the student taking notes or emailing a friend?

Pause for a moment. Scan the classroom. Are the downward faces tilted toward a glass screen? Does a soft glow emanate from below desks as statuses update, are liked, and text messages sent? A phone is held out. Is a picture being taken of the whiteboard and loaded into Evernote or is a video being recorded to be uploaded to Youtube.

The University of California at Berkeley invites applications for the position of Associate University Librarian (AUL) and Director of Digital Initiatives & Collaborative Services. This position is central to Berkeley’s goal of enhanced access to library resources for users on campus and off campus. Drawing upon expertise from across the Berkeley Library, campus partners, and UC System, the AUL supports Berkeley’s dynamic, research-intensive environment. As the primary technology planner for the Library, the AUL sets policy and strategic directions to ensure the Library maintains a reliable, scalable, and sustainable technology infrastructure; robust computing services for library users and library staff; vibrant web services, and expanding digital initiatives. The AUL also provides leadership and direction for the policies and services related to other collaborations reaching beyond the Berkeley campus such as the UC Berkeley Library Interlibrary Services and the Northern Regional Library Facility shared by the five northern UC campuses. With the tools to shape access to both legacy collections and newly digitized ones, the AUL will be an architect of new models for networked information.

One Flew Over the MOOC-oo’s Nest

This is a story about failure. It’s a story about learning and lofty goals; but, still, it’s a story about failure. And, the failure is all mine.

In September, I wrote a post, Lifelong Learning: MOOC’s vs Liberal Arts Colleges, and stated my intention to experiment by enrolling in both MOOC’s and a real course. Right there, did you catch that? I said, real course, and that’s an issue with MOOC’s. Put another way, it’s a thought process that led to my failure.
