The Novel Crisis

Interesting essay by Cathy Day, “The Story Problem: 10 Thoughts on Academia‚Äôs Novel Crisis.”  Looking at my experience with creative writing programs, there’s definitely truth in what she’s saying, however students who were interested in writing a novel usually did so as their thesis or dissertation and worked one on one with a professor.  All of those workshops teach writers how to write short stories, but the skills learned in crafting a 15-30 page story can be translated into a larger writing project.  Sure, there are differences, but all stories need characters, tension, and settings, as well as a list of other aspects that may or may not be included depending on one’s perspective of fiction.
