Instructional Technology Support Specialist at Montana State University-Bozeman


The Instructional Technology Support Specialist will build and maintain faculty development structures necessary to provide for successful online teaching and learning and coordinate these activities across MSU and its four campuses, where appropriate. The position will lead, develop and deliver broad-based training in use of online learning processes and resources for faculty, instructional staff and students. The tools provided by the learning management system (LMS) are used by nearly all students and most faculty to support high standards of teaching and learning, both in the classroom and at a distance. This position is part of a team of Online Education Specialists who share a wide range of duties (roughly 60% of effort); each team member also has his/her own special focus (about 40%). In this case, the special focus is scheduling and leading user training and workshops related to the LMS and online learning.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain and deliver existing workshops and courses for faculty teaching online and develop new ones as needed; develop and deliver customized discipline-specific workshops as requested.
  • Work with faculty one-on-one to provide recommendations for course design and best practices in online instruction.
  • Help faculty solve basic technical problems with the LMS; investigate and seek solutions to complex issues regarding online teaching and learning.
  • Continuously monitor the effectiveness of workshops and other faculty development activities.
  • Develop promotional announcements for workshops and courses.
  • Participate in weekly meetings of the Online Education Specialist group and other EU and MSU meetings as necessary.
  • Address functional and design issues involving online courseware for both students and faculty.
  • Communicate with other MSU campuses regarding operational issues as needed, and participate in policy setting discussions for MSU.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Familiarity with distance education concepts and educational/pedagogical theory.
  • Experience working with faculty to develop and deliver effective online courses, especially at a distance.
  • Demonstrated ability in providing exceptional training experiences preferably in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability using personal computers and a variety of software, such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, and the Internet, including an awareness of general computer use concepts (both Windows and Mac).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Learning Management Systems, preferably in higher education.
  • Experience with instructional design strategies and techniques to meet instructional technology and distance learning needs of higher education faculty at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Experience with database management.
  • Experience with web-based learning and its application to university instruction.
  • Professional activity in research, writing, and/or presenting about distance learning.
  • Experience using web site development code and/or software for the design and creation of functional web sites.
